By Barry Fox Toshiba of Japan has found a way to pack more transistors onto a microchip and make them work faster (EP 783 178). Ordinary chips use copper or aluminium tracks to connect components, but these leak current if too close together. Spacing them out limits the number of transistors that can be integrated on a single chip, and making them thinner increases their resistance and weakens the signal. Instead, Toshiba coats the tracks with carbon, and then heats it to ash which is blown out to create tube-like cavities in the semiconductor.
