Specialists in emergency medicine who test experimental therapies on unconscious patients may find their trials outlawed in the US if they don’t explain their work to the public. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration waived the normal requirement of informed consent for certain research projects aimed at testing therapies for unconscious stroke or trauma patients. To encourage public acceptance, researchers were asked to publicise their studies and ask for feedback.
